Jonathan Calleri is reportedly near the waters of European football.

According to Ed Aarons of the Guardian, West Ham United is close to signing Calleri on a year-long loan move from Deportivo Maldonado, a Uruguayan club that essentially acts as a middleman for transfers involving South American players and larger teams.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Hazan of Globo wrote Monday that West Ham is Calleri's "likely destination" although Sevilla and Internazionale have made offers for the Argentinian forward, and reports in Brazil have stated the 22-year-old sought advice from Carlos Tevez before making a decision on his future.

Calleri, who made a name for himself at Boca Juniors, was sold to Deportivo Maldonado in January by an investment fund and was subsequently loaned out to Sao Paulo, where he helped the Tricolor reach the semi-finals of this year's Copa Libertadores by scoring nine goals, more than any other player ahead of the tournament's final.

The transfer was a prime example of how Deportivo Maldonado operates. As Alex Duff and Lucia Baldomir of Bloomberg explain, the tiny club was founded in 2010 and operates by transferring elite South American players who never pull on the team's shirt. The business model eases the tax burden on investors who own transfer rights.

Of course, if Calleri puts pen to paper with West Ham, he'll be following in the footsteps of Tevez, whose first transfer to a European club saw him join the Hammers from Corinthians.
