Liverpool is confident of wrapping up a deal in the region of £20 million for Newcastle's Georginio Wijnaldum, according to The Telegraph's Chris Bascombe.

Wijnaldum is likely to leave Newcastle after falling with the club to the Championship, but the Magpies are hoping to make a sizable profit on the £14.5 million they paid to acquire the 25-year-old from PSV Eindhoven last year.

However, Bascombe believes Newcastle is holding out for a £27-million fee. Liverpool faces competition from other Premier League clubs looking to reinforce their midfield.

Manager Jurgen Klopp first had his eye on Udinese's Piotr Zielinski, but reports suggest the Poland international is heading to AC Milan instead.

There's hope that Wijnaldum could join the Reds before they leave for their U.S. tour on Thursday, but negotiations have not yet reached an advanced stage.

Klopp told reporters Sunday that he expects at least one or two more signings to arrive at Anfield before the end of the transfer window on Aug. 31.

Wijnaldum led Newcastle in Premier League scoring last season with 11 goals in 38 appearances.
