Rafa Benitez will battle to keep hold of Newcastle United's finest players, amid reported interest for Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko.

The Spanish gaffer previously announced his intention to retain the latter despite the midfielder revealing a wish to leave Tyneside after starring for France at Euro 2016, and will stand firm on £27-million-rated Wijnaldum too.

"We want to keep them, so I will not talk about money," said Benitez. "We want the right balance and we will make the right decision for the club."

While Sissoko has unequivocally stated his desire to end his 3 1/2-year stay, Dutchman Wijnaldum has reported for preseason training focused on returning Newcastle to the top flight at the first time of asking.

"He's a professional. A very good player, which we know. He's training well, which is good for him and also for the team," Benitez continued.

"I've had these situations in the past with players. Some can get disappointed, but we are a group of professionals and still they have to keep working."

Unpopular owner Mike Ashley hasn't been cautious in providing funds ahead of Benitez's first full season at St James' Park. Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, Matz Sels, Isaac Hayden, and Jesus Gamez have all joined for a total outlay of approximately £30 million. Talks are also apparently underway to bring in Blackburn Rovers defender Grant Hanley for a £6-million fee.

"We want to sign as soon as possible. We have a plan," explained the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss.

"We already have players with Championship experience. They know what it takes to get promotion and fight every week - and play two games a week. All we need is to bring in some players."

Newcastle kicks off its first match in the English second tier in over six years when it makes the trip to Fulham on Aug. 5.
