With the English top-tier summer transfer window open and an influx of television money burning a hole in the pockets of clubs both marquee and unheralded, squads are welcoming new members at a record clip.

Considering variables like transfer fees, top-flight experience and a club's dire needs, here's a look at the 10 best signings of the summer transfer window thus far:

1. Michy Batshuayi - Chelsea

With all due respect to hard-to-respect striker Diego Costa, one of Chelsea's most glaring needs during last year's belly-flop was a reliable forward. In steps Michy Batshuayi from Marseille. The 22-year-old Belgian international bagged 17 goals paired with nine assists in Ligue 1 to vault him among the continent's most desired strikers. Chelsea obliged, splashing £33.2 million to secure the Standard Liege product on a five-year deal.

2. Henrikh Mkhitaryan - Manchester United

Under Louis van Gaal, Manchester United was easily one of the league's most stodgy sides. With the Dutchman long gone and Jose Mourinho at the helm, Henrikh Mkhitaryan is precisely the type of player the Europa League-bound side needs. Unpredictable in attack with a penchant for cutting in paired with a talent for crossing the ball, the Armenian international will inject some much-needed variety for the club's return to the top four.

3. Granit Xhaka - Arsenal

Less a case of buying to address needs than a chance to lock up one of Europe's most talented young players, Arsenal signed deep-lying mid Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach for a reported fee of £35 million. Part of a congested midfield with Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, and Aaron Ramsey already in the ranks, Xhaka, 23, will add world-class passing skills coupled with a spirited edge that the club desperately lacked.

4. Sadio Mane - Liverpool

Like Xhaka, Sadio Mane makes the switch to a club rich in players that fulfill a similar role. Liverpool already boasts a four-pack of capable attackers in Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, and Christian Benteke, but like a landmine fired from a cannon, Mane offers an explosive ilk of football few can rival.

5. Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Manchester United

Free, old and with plenty of wear, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is football's equivalent of the lawnmower left unattended on the curb, though that's not to say he can't contribute to a side whose attack was as humdrum as it was limp last season. One of his generation's best strikers, the angular Swede is certain to improve Manchester United's title ambitions under Mourinho compared to the rag-tag group that took the pitch last year. The lone striker in a likely 4-2-3-1 formation, United doesn't have much to lose in acquiring the 34-year-old on a free transfer.

6. Nampalys Mendy - Leicester City

Defending an unlikely crown after topping the Premier League table by 10 points, Leicester City has added to a squad making its maiden voyage in continental football with signings that add cover in foresight of potential marquee exits. An unsung hero with Nice last season, Nampalys Mendy moves to the King Power Stadium for a modest £13 million, and at 24, the slick-passing midfielder is an option should N'Golo Kante jump ship for Chelsea.

7. Steve Mandanda - Crystal Palace

Apologies to Wayne Hennessey, Alex McCarthy, and veteran Julian Speroni, but if Crystal Palace is to carve a niche as a perennial top-half Premier League side, it needs a better shot-stopper. Those concerns were assuaged when the Eagles signed Steve Mandanda from Marseille on a free transfer. The four-time Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year should help Alan Pardew and co. better last season's poor minus-12 goal differential.

8. Victor Wanyama - Tottenham

With the relatively inexpensive £11-million move for Southampton's Victor Wanyama, Tottenham now boasts one of the top flight's best deep-lying midfield trio with Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele. Amazingly still just 25, the tough-tackling Kenyan makes the switch to White Hart Lane with three years of Premier League experience with the south coast Saints.

9. Ahmed Musa - Leicester City

With Claudio Ranieri opting for a counter-attacking brand of football to brilliant results, a secondary striker blessed with pace was needed to cover for 24-goal Jamie Vardy. The £16.6 million paid to pry the 58-time capped Nigerian international from CSKA Moscow is a club record for a player in the mold of Liverpool's newest stud Mane.

10. Lewis Cook - Bournemouth

An outlier among a list of veritable stars, Bournemouth central midfielder Lewis Cook was added to the Cherries' ranks this summer from Leeds United in a transfer that is largely flying under the radar. Like fellow Eddie Howe signings Lys Mousset and Emerson Hyndman, Cook, 19, is a highly graded youngster bought on the cheap.
