Middlesbrough completed the high-profile signing of World Cup-winning goalkeeper Victor Valdes on Thursday, making the 34-year-old the club's fifth acquisition of a busy summer.

Valdes agreed to join newly promoted Boro on a two-year deal.

"You can't imagine how delighted I am because it's not usual to bring players like him to recently promoted teams," said manager and compatriot Aitor Karanka in a statement.

The former Barcelona man didn't have a great first impression of English football. He initially joined Manchester United in 2015 as he recovered from knee surgery, but he slowly fell out of favour.

Banished from United's first team after a quarrel with Louis van Gaal, Valdes at one point last season had to settle for under-21 football. He played out the remainder of his United contract on loan at Standard Liege, where he made just six appearances.

He joins Viktor Fischer, Bernardo Espinosa, Marten de Roon, and Jordan McGhee as Boro's recent recruits.

Valdes featured in more than 500 matches for Barcelona, winning the Champions League three times. He also earned 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 winners' medals with Spain, although he was primarily a backup for Iker Casillas.
