Report: Atletico's Gamez set for Newcastle medical

Rarely used Atletico Madrid full-back Jesus Gamez is reportedly on the verge of joining Newcastle United after agreeing to a medical with the Championship side.

Gamez, 31, made just 10 La Liga appearances for Diego Simeone's lot last season, languishing behind a slew of talented defenders and prompting the reported move to England, according to Sky Sports.

With veteran Magpies defender Fabricio Coloccini return to Argentina, Rafa Benitez was desperate for a calming influence at the back, and he has that in Gamez.

Formerly the captain at Malaga, Gamez would help a dressing room in flux that's short on leaders.

The club has already addressed its attack-minded needs, signing Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace and Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth earlier in the window.
