Euro 2016 Debrief, Day 22: Welsh dive into uncharted territory

Darren Staples / Reuters

Each day throughout Euro 2016, we'll provide you with a briefing of everything you need to know from France after the day's matches have concluded, including highlights of the action, the most pressing news from the tournament, and, of course, a look ahead to the next games.

From the pitch

Wales 3, Belgium 1: Robson-Kanu heroics propel Dragons to historic semi-final

In just its second tournament since its World Cup quarter-final finish of 1958, Wales vaulted into Euro 2016's final four against a grossly underachieving Belgium on Friday.

Despite boasting the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Yannick Carrasco, Dries Mertens, Romelu Lukaku, and Michy Batshuayi, Red Devils boss Marc Wilmots still felt impelled to thrust Marouane Fellaini into the XI. The ungainly midfielder's introduction for the second half was fatal.

That's not to take anything away from Wales. Chris Coleman has forged a cohesive unit that was deserving of the win. Iceland versus Wales in the Stade de France final, anyone?

In the news

Del Bosque: Casillas was 'only player' I didn't send thank-you message

If there was a snake in the grass in Spain's camp, Vicente del Bosque just pulled it out and waved it around.

Iker Casilla was perturbed at reasonably being made second-choice goalkeeper behind David De Gea, and made his feelings clear as he apparently stomped like a cantankerous toddler though La Roja's training camp.

"With his teammates, he was OK, but with the coaching staff, his behaviour wasn’t good. His anger was directed at us," Del Bosque claimed.

Demand for Iceland kits 1,800 percent more than expected after England win

Football fans are literally buying into the Icelandic fairy tale.

Iceland shirt manufacturer Errea is struggling to meet a huge demand for the surprise package's jerseys, with an enormous 1,800 percent increase in those wanting to sport the national side's threads.

Poland, Portugal face UEFA disciplinary probes

The Polish Football Federation (PZPN) and Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) are in hot water with UEFA due to the behaviour of their fans in Thursday's quarter-final.

PZPN faces sanctions for crowd disturbances, a delay to kickoff, and setting off fireworks, with FPF having to answer a charge of the latter and field invasions by its supporters.

Manchester United confirms signing of Ibrahimovic on free transfer

The official opening of the transfer window sparked a frenzy of activity, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's move to Manchester United confirmed nine days after Sweden finished its Euro 2016 campaign.

Elsewhere, eliminated Spain's Nolito completed a transfer from Celta Vigo to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, and France's N'Golo Kante is apparently keen on leaving Leicester City for Chelsea.

Goal of the day

Hal Robson-Kanu's Cruyff turn was a delight, but it all began with a Radja Nainggolan thunderbolt. He's got a foot like a traction engine, that lad.

Best moment

Wales fans lose it.

Looking ahead

The first titanic clash of the quarter-finals sees Italy pitted against world champion Germany. The Azzurri have surprised many with how they eased into the final, but can the studious Antonio Conte mastermind another tactical clinic against scratch-and-sniff advocate Joachim Low's side?
