Report: Szczesny slated for Arsenal return as Roma talks dissolve

Reuters

Wojciech Szczesny's Italian sabbatical appears to be nearing its end after Roma and his parent club, Arsenal, have reportedly hit a stumbling block in negotiating a permanent move.

Arsenal now anticipates Szczesny's return to north London as the club determines the next step, according to the Guardian's David Hynter.

Szczesny, 26, joined Roma last summer on loan after Arsenal signed Petr Cech to handle the first-team duties, and the Polish international appeared to enjoy his time in Serie A.

Under Rudi Garcia and later Luciano Spalletti, Szczesny started 34 league matches, notching eight clean sheets in helping the Giallorossi finish third. He supplanted Morgan De Sanctis as the club's first-choice shot-stopper.

With Cech under contract at the Emirates through 2019, it's unlikely that Szczesny is in Arsenal's plans for next season. Roma would like Szczesny to stick around for at least another season, though the club's offers have been deemed unacceptable by the Gunners.

Even with his future in footballing limbo, Szczesny is focused on his Euro 2016 campaign with Poland.

"Arsenal and Roma are talking but I don’t want to worry about it now," Szczesny said. "Whether I’m an Arsenal player or a Roma player right now, it makes no difference to me. I want to focus on this tournament."
