Rooney vows support to Van Gaal amid Mourinho talk

Moments after Manchester United lifted its joint-record 12th FA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time defeat of Crystal Palace, widespread reports began to surface suggesting that Jose Mourinho would be named Red Devils manager during the week.

Hardly the way to celebrate the efforts of the gaffer that just made an addition to an already stacked trophy case, as Louis van Gaal was forced to answer questions about his future during a postmatch presser that should have been a celebratory affair.

Report: Mourinho to be appointed Manchester United manager this week

United captain Wayne Rooney came to Van Gaal's aid minutes after a talismanic display led his club to victory, offering, "I know nothing at all. That's a question for Louis van Gaal or (club chairman) Ed Woodward. It's nothing to do with me."

Echoing the sentiments of supporters and pundits alike in the wake of the rumoured appointment of the mercurial Portuguese manager, Rooney pledged his support behind the Dutchman.

"I don't want to speak about how Louis van Gaal has been because he's still our manager and he's still in his job. I think it's unfair after he's led us to win the FA Cup that we speak about him as if he's not here.

"I think he's a good manager and we are grateful for him helping us win this FA Cup. It's down to him or Ed Woodward to decide what happens."

If the former Dutch national team boss is shown the door in the summer, doing so with the club's first FA Cup since 2003-04 is quite the way to go.
