Report: Newcastle, Benitez talks at advanced stage

All signs are pointing to at least another season of Rafa Benitez roaming the touchline at St James' Park.

The Spanish gaffer and Newcastle representatives have reportedly reached the "advanced stage" of negotiations, according to Sky Sports, to ensure Benitez returns next season to help the relegated team during its first season outside the top flight in almost a decade.

Benitez, who previously managed Liverpool and Real Madrid, has held two meetings with owner Mike Ashley to "iron out" the final details on a contract that will see him return for his first full season with the Magpies after he was hired late in the 2015-16 term.

One of the main obstacles holding the deal up is Benitez's insistance on having complete autonomy with regards to transfers. He is also seeking assurances from Ashley that he will have the required funds to spend on new players over the duration of the next two transfer windows.

Following the team's last match of the season, Benitez indicated a willingness to stay, but admitted he needed time to decide the best route to take.

This latest development should leave supporters confident Newcastle can manage to make its stay in the Championship a brief one if the club can retain the experienced manager.
