Standard Liege cuts short Valdes' loan spell

Victor Valdes is in limbo once again.

Belgian club Standard Liege, where the 34-year-old has spent the past few months on loan from Manchester United, announced Friday it will end the goalkeeper's temporary deal by the end of this week.

Valdes only managed six league starts at Liege, which is now looking to give younger players a chance towards the end of the current campaign.

The decision leaves the former Spain international with a month to think over his options. Valdes is still set to become a free agent on June 30, when his deal with United expires, and he most certainly will not return to his parent club to see out the remainder of the contract.

He left the Red Devils on bitter terms in January after manager Louis van Gaal condemned Valdes to under-21 duty.

His time at Liege wasn't much better. Thought to be an escape from Old Trafford, Valdes had to trudge through muddy construction sites on the way to dressing rooms in Belgium. He then suffered a bizarre injury in training, taking a ball to the face and suffering pain in his neck and shoulders.

Liege confirmed that it could no longer select Valdes "for medical reasons," contributing to the premature divorce.
