Report: Everton targeting Stoke's Hughes to replace Martinez

Reuters

With speculation swirling concerning Roberto Martinez's future at Goodison Park, Everton is reportedly eyeing Stoke City boss Mark Hughes as a replacement for the Catalan.

In his third season at the Potters, Hughes is looking to build on two consecutive ninth-place finishes - a club best - and his role in turning the club from a defensive-minded outfit under Tony Pulis to one of attacking impetus has attracted Everton, according to John Cross of the Mirror.

A veteran of managing Premier League sides, Hughes' impressive run with Stoke has gone a long way toward cancelling out a dismal spell at Queens Park Rangers. The former Manchester United forward has also bossed Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, and the Welsh national team.

The Toffees' new major shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, appears set to see the Merseysiders bounce back from their mid-table standing, with an influx of cash likely to be paired with a new manager.

While Hughes' stock is rising, Martinez's continues to plummet, after a 4-0 derby drubbing to Liverpool was followed by an FA Cup semi-final's dismissal courtesy of United.

Everton sits 11th in the table and face a fight to keep young stars John Stones and Romelu Lukaku in what could be a summer of flux for the Toffees.
