Manchester United legend Roy Keane has never been wary of voicing his controversial opinions, and offered a scathing response to Wayne Rooney's post-match lament about his side's lack of killer instinct in a drab 0-0 draw with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

"Wayne was on about a lack of composure and quality, and he was as guilty as anybody. He needs to step up to the plate," he said on ITV, according to ESPN FC.

According to the former midfielder, Rooney may have stepped up to an entirely different plate and devoured its contents.

"Mentally he doesn't look sharp, physically he doesn't look in a great shape. He has to have a look at himself."

Keane was also unimpressed by Rooney's attendance at a recent wrestling event in Manchester, during which he offered some light comedy by striking WWE fighter Wade Barrett from his seat in the front row.

"I always question certain players - what are they doing off the field? I saw Wayne last week slapping a wrestler, and I'm thinking: 'Why is he getting involved in all that nonsense?'

"There's no benefit to him, so I think I would look at that side to it. It's not helping him. If you're not at it yourself, you have to have a look and lead by example. He didn't do that (against PSV)."

The ex-United skipper said he appreciates how much Rooney has done for the club since joining from Everton in 2004, but believes it's time for him to step up as captain and one of the more senior members of the squad.

"Wayne's legacy at Manchester United is absolutely fantastic. His goals record is brilliant, but now he's the captain there's a bit more responsibility and he has to do a lot more."
