Bayern Munich ease into semifinals after dominating Porto

Bayern Munich are off to the Champions League semifinals after thumping five first half goals past FC Porto for the comfortable 6-1 victory and 7-4 advantage on aggregate.

FC Porto's fairytale run in the Champions League came to a crushing end Tuesday when their efforts to maintain a commanding first leg lead were demolished by a fiercely determined Bayern Munich side.

The game was virtually over after 35 minutes, when first half goals from Thiago Alcantara, Jerome Boateng, Robert Lewandowski, and Thomas Muller erased Porto's two-goal advantage.

Lewandowski added his second minutes before halftime to crush Porto's dreams and send Bayern into the break with the commanding lead and psychological edge.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Porto players made themselves known with a series of heavy tackles in the opening minutes in an effort to throw the hosts out of their rhythm.
  • Clearly, Porto's physical play had little impact as Bayern's pressure persisted. Their best effort occurred just before the 10-minute mark when Mueller's effort was swatted away by Fabiano. Lewandowski did well to get on the rebound, but saw his shot smack off the far post.
  • Bayern Munich 1, FC Porto 0: Thiago made the assignment of overcoming the 3-1 deficit easier when his powerful header pierced the back of the net. Bernat delivered a great ball to the near post and found a poorly marked Thiago for the goal.
  • Bayern Munich 2, FC Porto 0: Moments later, Jerome Boateng doubled Bayern's lead when he out-leaped defenders and got his head on the end of a cross for the host's second goal in less than 10 minutes.
  • Things got heated when Ricardo Quaresma and Juan Bernat got into a bit of a scuffle after the Portuguese player fouled the Bayern defender and proceeded to shove his face. Bernat retaliated with a push but the match official didn't show either a yellow card.
  • Bayern Munich 3, FC Porto 0: Bayern never eased up on the pressure, as Lewandowski scored the club's third goal, and third header, when he was left alone in the box for the easy finish.
  • Bayern Munich 4, FC Porto 0: Mueller's goal to make it 4-0 summed up the night for FC Porto. The German forward unleashed a shot from outside the box, only to see it smack off Bruno Martins Indi and trickle past a helpless Fabiano.
  • Bayern Munich 5, FC Porto 0: Bayern continued to pad its lead and traumatize Porto psychologically when Lewandoski scores his second, courtesy of a clever finish inside the far post.

Second Half

  • Whether it was a matter of damage control for Porto or Bayern taking its foot off the gas, the second half got off to a lackluster start.
  • Seemingly never content with his team, manager Pep Guardiola continued to bark out orders to his side despite a 5-0 lead. The Spanish boss was so worked up that he suffered a slight tear in his pants while yelling out instructions.
  • Bayern Munich 5, FC Porto 1: Porto finally found a way past Bayern when Jackson Martinez headed in the club's first goal of the day. He was lucky though, as replays showed he was clearly offside.
  • Bayern Munich 6, FC Porto 1: Bayern hammered the nail in the coffin in the dying minutes courtesy of Xabi Alonso's curling free-kick found the back of the net.
  • Following the final whistle, it was time for Muller and the boys to celebrate with Bayern's faithful supporters.
Y si, amamos amar a Thomas #Müller
