Champions League draw: Madrid derby headlines quarterfinal stage

The draw for the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League was made Friday in Nyon, Switzerland, and with only eight teams remaining, it was inevitable that some mouthwatering matchups would emerge.

And so they did.

The crown jewel of the round is a rematch of last season's final, as Real Madrid will meet bitter local rivals Atletico. The latter will look to avenge their 4-1 extra-time defeat from that contest in Lisbon, where they were seconds away from claiming the coveted trophy.

Los Blancos, meanwhile, have not beaten Atletico in six matches since, getting steamrolled in their most recent meeting - a 4-0 loss at the Vicente Calderon.

Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain were rewarded for their thrilling victory over Chelsea in the Round of 16 with ... a trip to the Camp Nou. Nobody said this tournament was fair.

Here are the four ties that will captivate the football world next month:

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Barcelona

  • First leg: Wednesday, April 15 (Parc des Princes)
  • Second leg: Tuesday, April 21 (Camp Nou)

Instant Analysis: PSG were able to defeat Barcelona in their first Group F encounter back in September, but with the Spanish side vastly improved from the early months of the season - and with Lionel Messi on another level at the moment - it's difficult to envision the French club reaching the semifinals.

Atletico Madrid vs. Real Madrid

  • First leg: Tuesday, April 14 (Vicente Calderon)
  • Second leg: Wednesday, April 22 (Santiago Bernabeu)

Instant Analysis: Neither side is playing particularly well at the moment, so this could very well come down to which capital-based club can regain their early-season form ahead of the first leg. Despite their 4-0 victory in the most recent meeting, Atletico will once again be viewed as the underdogs.

FC Porto vs. Bayern Munich

  • First leg: Wednesday, April 15 (Estadio do Dragao)
  • Second leg: Tuesday, April 21 (Allianz Arena)

Instant Analysis: Bayern Munich will, rightfully, be the overwhelming favorites coming off their destruction of Shakhtar Donetsk in the round of 16. The Portuguese side have the attacking talent to trouble the Bayern defense, but nobody seems capable of slowing down Pep Guardiola's attacking juggernaut, and Porto is no exception.

Juventus vs. AS Monaco

  • First leg: Tuesday, April 14 (Juventus Stadium)
  • Second leg: Wednesday, April 22 (Stade Louis II)

Instant Analysis: Both teams will be pleased. While Juventus will be expected by many to reach the semifinal following the draw, Monaco proved in the last round against Arsenal that they are more than capable of making a mess of everyone's predictions. Can they do it again?
