Juventus advance to Champions League quarterfinals at Borussia Dortmund's expense

Welcome to the quarterfinals, Juventus.

In a rematch of the 1996-97 final, a phenomenal away performance at the Westfalenstadion on Wednesday saw Juventus establish themselves as one of the final eight sides in the Champions League, as they overran an unimaginative Borussia Dortmund squad and walked away with a 3-0 win to advance 5-1 on aggregate.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Referencing the 1996-97 Champions League final that saw Dortmund defeat Juventus 3-1 to claim their first-ever - and only - title in the competition, supporters of the German club revealed a tifo ahead of kickoff that featured the European Champion Clubs' Cup being hoisted in front of a mosaic that read "1997."
  • Borussia Dortmund 0, Juventus 1: It took all of three minutes for Juventus to open the scoring and silence the crowd at the Westfalenstadion, as Carlos Tevez launched a 25-yard screamer through a gap in Dortmund's backline and past the outstretched fingertips of Roman Weidenfeller. Wild celebrations ensued:
  • Tevez's goal continued his excellent run of form in the Champions League and brought an end to Dortmund's streak of 216 minutes of action without a conceding a goal at home.
  • A first half loaded with rough challenges and free kicks saw Paul Pogba exit the match in the 28th minute after suffering an apparent hamstring injury while going into a tackle. Pogba was seen hobbling to the dressing room and was replaced by Andrea Barzagli.
  • The final moments of the first half saw Juventus pass around the ball and look to simply maintain possession, much to the visible frustration of Jurgen Klopp.
  • Borussia Dortmund 0, Juventus 2: In a second half where Dortmund continued to look uninspired and short on creativity, Juventus deservedly doubled their lead in the 70th minute. The goal was the result of Dortmund's backline being caught far too high up the pitch, as Tevez ran onto an aerial ball before playing a pass to Alvaro Morata, who merely needed to tap the ball over the line. Even Gianluigi Buffon, normally reserved, couldn't help but display some emotion.
  • Frustrations boiled over immediately after Juventus's second goal. Marco Reus became the first player to receive a yellow card in the match after talking back to referee Milorad Mazic regarding a tackle on Claudio Marchisio.
  • Borussia Dortmund 0, Juventus 3: Game, set, and a berth in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. If there were any doubts remaining over the tie, Juventus ended them effectively in the 83rd minute with another counterattacking goal. Once again, it was Tevez finding the back of the net, as he had no trouble slotting home a shot after Roberto Pereyra fed him a pass.
  • As Dortmund supporters exited the Westfalenstadion, Juventus fans could be heard chanting Tevez's name until the final whistle.
