Bayern Munich CEO: Referee in Shakhtar match 'was a catastrophe'

Reuters

Bayern Munich is none too pleased with Alberto Undiano Mallenco.

The Spaniard oversaw the club's goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday in the first leg of their Round of 16 Champions League tie, leaving some at the club displeased at the final whistle - particularly with his decision to show Xabi Alonso a red card.

While Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer only called the referee's performance odd and manager Pep Guardiola refused to address it following the match, CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had no problem voicing his qualms.

"I have to clearly say that the referee was a catastrophe," Rummenigge told Die Welt. "What this man showed here was far from Champions League standard."

After questioning the decision to show Alonso two yellow cards, the Bayern chief continued: "Fundamentally, I think it was a debatable performance by the referee. Donetsk played extremely rough, and when the referee lets the players get away with it there will usually be no flow of play."
