Xabi Alonso sent off as Shakhtar frustrate Bayern Munich in feisty affair

Tuesday's match in Ukraine could have easily been mistaken for a boxing match rather than a football contest.

Few could have predicted the struggles Bayern Munich experienced in their opening match of the knockout stage against Shakhtar Donetsk. Physical play was ultimately their undoing as Shakhtar consistently tested the patience of the visitors, forcing several reckless responses from what is normally a disciplined Bayern Munich squad.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Shakhtar's defensive approach was impressive from the opening whistle as their organization at the back thwarted Bayern's early attempts to breakthrough on goal.
  • Arjen Robben had the game's closest attempt when his run into the box eluded defenders, but his ball to Thomas Muller saw the forward push the effort wide.
  • Rafinha earned what was the first of eight yellow cards in the match. It was a sign of things to come as the physicality from both teams prevented either side from finding a rhythm.
  • Bayern closed out the half after dominating possession, but saw their six shots in the half go to waste. They missed the final touch of Robert Lewandowski, who started the game on the bench.
  • The second half started the same way the first finished. Shakhtar continued its physical play, only to be matched by reckless challenges from the German champions.
  • Following his first half yellow card, Xabi Alonso saw his 100th appearance in the tournament end prematurely when he was shown his second yellow for a challenge on Taison. It was a soft foul considering the number of challenges that appeared to be more cynical that weren't booked.
  • 10-man Bayern made two moves after the sending off when they introduced Holger Badstuber and Lewandowski.
  • The Germans couldn't find an answer as a stubborn Shakhtar defence rarely lost its composure and will be thrilled with the result before the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
  • Bayern will be bitterly disappointed after registering its lowest shots on goal output since 2012 after only managing one against 'keeper Andriy Pyatov.
