Who's in, who's out: Breaking down the Champions League group stage

Reuters

Take a breath, everyone.

The frantic action of the Champions League group stage came to an end on Wednesday, and with it, so did the dreams of advancing to the knockout stages for 16 eager clubs.

While half the teams that began the tournament will either drop to the Europa League or close the book on their European adventures altogether for this year, 16 others will look ahead to February and the next round of the continent's most illustrious competition.

All of the usual suspects are there.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Chelsea lead the way, while perennial dark horses Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus will hope for a favorable draw come Dec. 15, when the match-ups for the Round of 16 are revealed.

Here's how the draw will be divided:

Group Winners

Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, AS Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea, FC Porto

Group Runners-up

Juventus, FC Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Schalke, Shakhtar Donetsk

Teams from the same country can't be in a draw against one another in the Round of 16, with the same ringing true for teams who were together in the group stage.

Irregardless, there are some potentially delicious ties that could be pulled from the two pots come Monday in Nyon, Switzerland.

For example, we could get the treat of seeing Real Madrid and Juventus lock horns, Barcelona rekindle pleasantries with Manchester City or Bayern Munich tangle with Paris Saint-Germain. Juicy, indeed.
