Hodgson says Rooney has 'plenty of games left' to reach England all-time scoring record
After scoring from the penalty spot in England's 5-0 win over San Marino in Euro 2016 qualifying on Thursday, Wayne Rooney now sits on 42 international goals, seven back of Sir Bobby Charlton, who holds the Three Lions' all-time scoring record.
Rooney had the opportunity to notch more than one goal in the fixture, but he missed a number of decent chances, including two one-on-one situations against 'keeper/accountant Aldo Simoncini.
However, at the age of 28, Rooney still has more than enough time to surpass Charlton's record, something that manager Roy Hodgson pointed out after the match.
"The record won't play on Wayne's mind," Hodgson said. "How old is he? [29 later in the month.] We'd like to think, with the way he is and the footballer he is, he's got a good few years in him yet. There are plenty of games left. I don't think we should put any pressure on him to reach targets early.
"He got in a lot of time tonight. His runs were very good. He's a bit disappointed with the chip. He though that was on. I'm more than happy with him. It was another good captain's performance. He was solid throughout."
England's Euro 2016 qualifier versus Estonia on Sunday will provide Rooney with his next opportunity to close in on Charlton's record.
