Manchester City's tweet before the match brought me luck, says Francesco Totti
Roma's legendary captain Francesco Totti made history last night in Manchester, becoming the oldest player to ever score a Champions League goal when he found the net against City, helping his side secure what could end up being a monumental 1-1 draw.
Totti, 38, was the topic of some friendly banter between the official Twitter accounts of the two teams prior to the match, with his scoring record in England brought into question.
Prophetic, indeed.
Naturally, he was asked about the comment following the match.
“City’s tweet? It really brought me luck,” Totti told the Gazzetta dello Sport, via The Guardian. “It was a beautiful goal and a good performance.
“I really wanted to score as soon as possible as I had not found the back of the net this season. But above all, I am thrilled for my team because we have shown a lot of strength, which was not easy.”
The goal saw Totti surpass Ryan Giggs as the oldest goalscorer in the competition, and, as he notes, more importantly put Roma on four points in Group E, three ahead of their English counterparts.
