3 things you need to know about Tuesday's Champions League action

It was another memorable day in the tournament that never fails to disappoint as Tuesday's Champions League action offered the usual displays of excitement and heroics, coupled with a pair history making performances.

Here are three things you need to know from Tuesday's Champions League action:

Marquinhos' block highlights 5-goal thriller between PSG and Barcelona

It was a match jam-packed with goals, but it will be Marquinhos' game-saving block that will live on in the memories of Paris Saint-Germain supporters after their famous 3-2 victory against Barcelona in Paris on Tuesday night.

The match got off to a blistering start when David Luiz's opening goal was cancelled out by a beautiful surge up the field by Barcelona that was capped off by Lionel Messi's first goal of this season's Champions League campaign.

The Parc des Princes was buzzing again before the half hour mark when an unlikely candidate for a header sent the hosts into the lead for the second time in the match. Marco Verratti, one of the smallest players on the pitch at 5-foot-4, gave the hosts the lead when he found himself unmarked on the back post during a corner kick to head the ball into the Barca net.

Blaise Matuidi bagged the Parisian's third goal 10 minutes into the second half, but, as they did after the first goal, Barcelona was quick to score when Neymar smashed his first goal of the tournament past 'keeper Salvatore Sirigu.

Desperate to get back into the match, Barcelona introduced one of its most esteemed players when Xavi was brought on in an effort to inspire the Catalan club. Xavi has now appeared in 143 Champions League games - the most in history.

Barcelona pressed heavily in the final 20 minutes of the game and created numerous opportunities for a third goal, yet none looked more likely to go in than Jordi Alba's volley. His effort, however, inspired a fantastic defensive display from Marquinhos when the Brazilian defender lunged in front of Alba's shot and deflected the ball into the stands to secure three points for PSG.

Premier League sides struggle for points during Matchday 2

Manchester City's Champions League woes continued Tuesday as they failed to capture an important three points at the Eithad Stadium against Roma.

Roma defender Maicon handed the hosts the lead when his foul in the box led to a penalty kick, producing a Sergio Aguero goal from the spot. The lead, however, was erased when Francesco Totti offered a flash of greatness when the 38-year-old found himself alone on the City goal and smoothly chipped the ball over Joe Hart.

Roma's midfield deserves most of the credit for keeping the hosts off the score sheet, and out of rhythm, in the second half after their efforts forced numerous turnovers. The play of  Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan proved too much for the likes of Yaya Toure and Fernandinho as the visitors earned an important draw.

Meanwhile, despite Chelsea's 1-0 victory, their hosts, Sporting CP, made life difficult for the Premier League club in what should have been a relatively painless three points.

Chelsea didn't break through the Sporting defence until the 32nd minute when midfielder Nemanja Matic soared above the defenders and hit a well-placed header beyond the 'keeper.

Chelsea gambled with the fitness of leading-scorer Diego Costa and almost paid for it in the first half when the striker suffered a heavy collision with a defender while he was on the break in the Sporting end. Costa also had a glorious scoring chance saved by the 'keeper and, surprisingly, was left in for the entire match. It would be hard to see a scenario where he plays another full 90 minutes during Chelsea's next Premier League match against Arsenal.

Bayern Munich silence CSKA Moscow in front of empty stadium

Bayern Munich accomplished the 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow in the Russians' home stadium, where fans were banned from attending the match as a result of a UEFA punishment for the racial abuse of players by its supporters.

Bayern came away with the victory thanks to a Thomas Muller penalty and could have added another if it were not for an offside call on a superb team goal that carved through the CSKA defence.

That's six points for the German champions as they continue their dominant play and should come out on top of the group. The only real competition is for second place at this point.
