Ludogorets Razgrad, Steaua Bucharest punished by UEFA for racist behavior of supporters

The two-legged series between Ludogorets Razgrad and Steaua Bucharest proved to be the most dramatic of the Champions League play-offs as defender Cosmin Moti was forced to put on the gloves for the deciding penalty shootout and subsequently provided the heroics by deflecting two of the Romanian side's penalties.

Unfortunately, both legs were marred by racism from the home supporters, and Ludogorets and Steaua are now facing disciplinary action from UEFA.

Specifically, Ludogorets are being punished for racist behavior, improper conduct of the team (five cards and more), insufficient organization, and a pitch invasion. The sanctions include having a section of their stadium closed off for their opening home match in the group stage of the Champions League versus Real Madrid and €16,000 in fines.

Steaua, meanwhile, are being punished for racist behavior, setting off and throwing fireworks and missiles, and improper conduct of the team. Their sanctions include playing their first home match in the group stage of the Europa League against Aalborg behind closed doors as well as €64,500 in fines.

UEFA's disciplinary action marks the second time that Steaua have been punished for their supporters' racist behavior.
