Guardiola-led side fails to reach quarter-finals for 1st time
Pep Guardiola suffered the earliest Champions League exit of his managerial career Wednesday at the helm of Manchester City, bowing out of the competition before the quarter-final stage for the first time.
In seven previous attempts, Guardiola had never failed to lead either Barcelona or Bayern Munich past the Round of 16, but Monaco's kamikaze football swarmed City and made the Spaniard's lot look uncomfortable without possession. Despite pulling off a 6-6 tie on aggregate, Leonardo Jardim's men edged the Premier League outfit on away goals.
Monaco's fearlessness at the Etihad proved the difference, with three of its tallies coming in northwest England.
A slow start to the first half of Wednesday's second leg did not help City's cause. Monaco put itself in a position to qualify after strikes from teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho.
Despite a more spirited performance in the last 45 minutes, City couldn't produce the goals to outgun its Ligue 1 counterpart.
