Zidane takes responsibility for Real's damning draw vs. Legia

Seven forwards deployed, no home fans, and some composed work in the middle of the park from Mateo Kovacic. Still, Real Madrid couldn't claim a win against Legia Warsaw behind closed doors.

The Polish club was ordered to play in front of an empty Polish Army Stadium in Wednesday's Champions League group meeting due to the recent misbehaviour of its support, but was edging towards an unlikely comeback victory until Kovacic's late equaliser made it 3-3.

Considering the riches at Zidane's disposal, and the match appearing to follow the script of an easy win when Gareth Bale struck after 57 seconds and Karim Benzema followed on 35 minutes, it was a disappointing evening for Los Blancos.

"We lacked a little bit of everything, especially our intensity which failed us," Zidane said, according to Marca. "When that happened, our rival scored three goals, and I'm the one responsible."

The lack of intensity was evident when a patient passing move culminated with Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe sauntering past Kovacic - that man again - and finishing a lush, 19-yard effort. Unfortunately for Zidane, his side's wake-up call wasn't heeded, and it eventually fell down 3-2.

"When you go 2-0 up you have to think more and play together as a team, but we didn't do that and we allowed them to have more space," the Frenchman continued. "We have to analyse our players' performances and improve.

"The game changed when they scored their first goal. Our desire and intensity dropped massively."

Elsewhere in Group F, Borussia Dortmund was able to edge into the last 16 with two matches to spare courtesy of a 1-0 defeat of Sporting Lisbon. While only a point for Real against Sporting in three weeks' time would secure progression, the prospect of facing a first-placed team from another group looms.

"Certainly, the result makes it complicated for us to finish first in the group," he conceded. "In the end we didn't lose, which is good, but it's a strange feeling."

Away from continental concerns, Real attempts to retain top spot in La Liga when CD Leganes visits the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
