Atletico Madrid accepts January transfer ban; continues appeal process

Atletico Madrid has resided itself to the fact that there will be no new arrivals this January.

In a joint statement with FIFA, Atletico accepted a transfer ban for the upcoming transfer window and accepted a deadline for the Court of Arbitration for Sport to come to a verdict regarding the one-year transfer ban the world soccer governing body imposed on it in January.

It's a decision that will allow the Court of Arbitration for Sport to decide whether to accept or deny the Spanish side's appeal by June 1, 2017.

Instead of delaying its one-year transfer ban, which the FIFA Appeal Committee upheld in September, Los Rojiblancos has opted to forego its appeal for the next transfer window in order for the Court of Arbitration for Sport to come to a decision.

Atletico initially preferred to delay the January transfer ban as it fought FIFA's ruling. However, despite the latest revelation, Atletico continues to argue that the ruling is "unjustified":

Even though Atletico Madrid completely maintains its position that the transfer ban is unjustified, it has decided to waive its right to seek suspensive effect for the next winter transfer period so as to ensure a procedural calendar that allows Atletico Madrid to fully present its case, while giving the Panel sufficient time to thoroughly review all documents, consider all arguments and finalize the reasons before rendering its award.

Real Madrid was also slapped with a one-year transfer embargo after FIFA ruled that the two clubs were in violation of signing underage players.

An appeal during the summer allowed Atletico to sign players such as Nicolas Gaitan and Kevin Gameiro.
