Best moments from 2015-16 Champions League season

There's no shortage of moments that will remain fresh in the minds of football supporters well beyond Saturday's final in Milan.

Whether it's individual performances, an underdog pulling off a stunning upset, or epic matches between two of Europe's elite, the 2015-16 Champions League campaign arguably exceeded the annual hype surrounding the competition.

From the group stage to the final, here's a look back at the tournament's most memorable moments:

Florenzi's wonder goal vs. Barca

Simply stunning.

Not even Alessandro Florenzi could comprehend the amazing feat he'd just pulled off against Barcelona as he buried his face in his hands in a moment of sheer disbelief.

With Roma and the Spanish giants locked in a tight group stage fixture, Florenzi sent the Stadio Olimpico into a frenzy when he unleashed an ambitious shot from just inside the halfway line that stunningly managed to elude Marc-Andre ter Stegen and bulge the back of the net to bring the match level.

Luis Suarez volley vs. Arsenal

There was still a glimmer of hope when Mohamed Elneny chopped Arsenal's deficit against Barcelona down to 3-1 in the second leg of its Round of 16 tie.

Luis Suarez, however, extinguished any talk of a comeback 15 minutes later after executing a thunderous volley into the top corner of goal to restore Barca's advantage en route to the quarterfinal stage.

Atletico wins marathon shootout

Atletico Madrid and PSV Eindhoven made up for 120 minutes of scoreless football in a penalty shoot-out where nerves seemingly disappeared as each side put on a clinic from the spot.

It wasn't until the 15th player before Atletico booked its place into the quarterfinals as Luciano Narsingh's effort off the crossbar triggered wild celebrations inside the Vicente Calderon.

Instant Classic: Bayern vs. Juve

The Allianz Arena was the scene for what a majority of supporters will describe as the match of the tournament when Bayern Munich and Juventus produced a classic quarterfinal fixture.

After Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado stunned the hosts with two goals inside 30 minutes to give Juve a commanding 4-2 advantage, Bayern pulled off one of the great comebacks with a four-goal display in the second half to break Juve hearts and progress to the quarterfinals.

Wolfsburg stuns Real Madrid

There's no easy draws in the knockout stage, but Wolfsburg was probably one of the teams that Europe's elite was hoping to be paired with, until the German outfit thrashed Real Madrid and grabbed a 2-0 win in the first leg of its quarterfinal encounter.

Ronaldo's two goals in two minutes

Los Blancos, however, didn't waste any time in erasing Wolfsburg's advantage, when early in the second leg matchup Cristiano Ronaldo brought Real level with two goals in two minutes before the game was 20 minutes old. He added a third in the second frame to ensure progression.

Saul Niguez's incredible solo goal vs. Bayern

They don't get any prettier than Saul Niguez's opener against Bayern Munich.

Fresh off eliminating La Liga rivals Barcelona, few expected Atletico could recreate the same magic against the Bundesliga title holders. Yet, 10 minutes into the first leg, Saul had the run of his life as he left five Bayern defenders for dead with a piercing run into the box before a tidy finish past Manuel Neuer.

It was the lone goal of the encounter, giving Atletico the unexpected advantage before the second match.

Atletico knocks out Bayern

Atletico's mission was far from complete when Diego Simeone's men arrived in Munich for the final leg.

It took half an hour for the Germans to bring the tie level before Thomas Muller's chance to put Bayern ahead with an opportunity from the penalty spot. But Jan Oblak had other ideas as the Atletico net-minder stopped Muller's effort to give the Spanish side hope heading into the break.

Hope turned into jubilation soon after the match resumed when Antoine Griezmann converted from the spot to all but ensure Rojiblancos a place in the final for the second time in three years.

Ronaldo scores Champions League winning penalty

Despite appearing to be in a bit of pain throughout the contest, there's no way Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't taking the match-winning penalty against Atletico Madrid.

It was a moment made for the Portuguese star, who showed no signs of anxiety as he calmly ran up to the spot and converted to secure an 11th European trophy for Los Blancos. The final produced a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, before the two sides battled it out in a penalty shootout.
