The Juwan Simpson era in Calgary is over, as the Stampeders have released the veteran linebacker after eight years with the team.

Simpson has been with the Stamps since 2008. In 11 games last season, he racked up 27 tackles, two sacks, and one interception.

"This was a very difficult decision but one that was necessary because of salary-cap considerations and the need to give an opportunity to younger players," general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement. "I thank Juwan for everything he has done on and off the field for the Calgary Stampeders. It was a true pleasure to have been Juwan's coach these past eight years and I wish him all the best."

During his time with Calgary, Simpson appeared in 115 regular-season games and 11 playoff games, capturing two Grey Cups in the process. In 2010, he was a finalist for the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

"It's been eight years, two rings, and a lot of ups and downs in between," Simpson said. "I'd like to thank all my teammates for the hard work put forth day in and day out. It's been a great ride and I've enjoyed every moment of it."
