Argos Grey Cup winning quarterback Fred (Scooter) Doty dies at age 90

TORONTO - Fred (Scooter) Doty, a two-time Grey Cup champion quarterback with the Toronto Argonauts in 1945 and 1947, died Sunday.

He was 90 years old.

Doty was just five-foot-six and 140 pounds, but despite his stature he played defence as well as quarterback.

Following the 1945 season he joined the University of Toronto football team where he was a conference all-star at quarterback for the Varsity Blues, but still managed to play three games for the Argos.

Doty returned to the Argonauts full-time in 1946 and finished his career in 1949.

He was a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and learned to play football while playing pickup games at the barracks in Calgary.

He earned a civil engineering degree and was vice-president of Johns Manville (Canada), a roofing and insulation company, and president of Dufferin Concrete Products. Doty was an active member of the Argos Alumni Association until his death.

Tobin, one of his two sons, also played five years for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
