CFL Game Summary - Montreal at Toronto

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Montreal Alouettes forced two turnovers - one on downs - on crucial defensive stands late in the fourth quarter as they held on to beat the Toronto Argonauts, 20-12, in an East Division battle at Rogers Centre Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Jonathan Crompton connected with S.J. Green on a first-quarter touchdown, and Tanner Marsh ran in a one-yard major to open the fourth quarter that set up Montreal (7-8) for the win. The Alouettes have the best record against East Division opponents this season at 4-1.

Crompton completed 19-of-28 passing in the contest for 219 yards and the first-quarter touchdown. S.J. Green, who was on the receiving end of that score, caught a team-high six passes for 91 yards for the Alouettes.

Swayze Waters was the only player who put points on the board for Toronto (6-9), as the kicker connected on all four of his field goal attempts in the game. He has now made 11 consecutive kicks from 40-plus yards. Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray was intercepted in the waning seconds of the game by Jerald Brown, which sealed the Alouettes' victory.

Ray connected on 25-of-39 pass attempts for 202 yards with his late-game interception. Chad Owens pulled in seven receptions for 77 yards, and Steve Slaton carried the ball seven times for 51 yards.

Waters put Toronto on top with a 30-yard field goal to open the scoring in the first quarter, but Montreal tied it behind a Sean Whyte 35-yard field goal strike. The Als took the 10-3 advantage at the end of the quarter when Crompton hit Green for the 10-yard scoring play.

The only score in the second quarter was a 49-yard field goal by Waters, while Whyte had the game's only points in the third period thanks to a 37-yard field goal of his own.

Just 38 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Alouettes extended their lead to 20-6 thanks to the one-yard touchdown run by Marsh.

Two more Waters field goals closed out the scoring, though the Argos had two chances late to find the end zone. Montreal forced a turnover on downs on Toronto's second-to-last possession, and Brown intercepted Ray with just seconds remaining to shut the door on the 20-12 victory.

With the playoff picture still wide open in the East Division, Toronto and Montreal will clash once more during the regular season in a contest scheduled for Nov. 2.
