Brandon Whitaker will remain with the Toronto Argonauts next season, as the team announced Wednesday it has re-signed the 2016 East Division All-Star for a third year.

Whitaker is coming off a campaign in which he rushed for 1,009 yards on 186 carries with three touchdowns. The 31-year-old became the first Argonauts rusher to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season since Cory Boyd in 2011.

He also became the 41st player in CFL history to reach the 5,000 career rushing yard plateau.

Whitaker returns for his ninth season in the league, after spending his first six with the Montreal Alouettes.
