The spirit of competition can sometimes breed repulsive actions, some of which were on display Saturday as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers took on the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

During the game, Blue Bombers fans berated Janelle-Marie Emond and her 9-year-old son, who was attending his first ever football game. The fans became irate that Emond's son was wearing a green sweater, the main colour of the opposing Roughriders, according to Nelly Gonzalez of CBC News.

Emond clarified that, despite the sweater's colour, it wasn't branded with anything pertaining to the Roughriders.

"It was a green Billabong sweater and he was wearing a Bomber T-shirt underneath, that you could clearly see," Emond said.

Mother and son were also attacked as they tried to leave the stadium.

"These two girls in the concourse looked at me and they looked at my son and they're like yelling 'You're a Riders fan, you suck, go back to where you came from!' and the girl took a beer and poured it over top of my son's head," Emond said.

"As soon as the Club was made aware of the incident, fans services reached out to the family after which our President and CEO spoke with the mother this morning," a Blue Bomber statement to CBC said.

"The organization delivered a package from the Bomber store for the family and is working to bring them back to a game as our guests to show them a much better experience, including a post-game meeting with Bomber players," the statement continued. "We consistently strive to provide all of our great fans the best game day experience possible, and incidents like these are extremely disappointing and do not represent the majority of our fan base."
