Blue Bombers meet Stampeders in battle of winless teams
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders both look to grab their first win of the 2016 season when the two teams meet Friday at McMahon Stadium.
Points were tough to come by for the Bombers' offence in the season opener versus the Montreal Alouettes last week, as the club couldn't find the end zone until the fourth quarter of the 22-14 setback. Quarterback Drew Willy posted solid numbers, throwing for 303 yards and a score, but Winnipeg's inability to convert drives into points hurt them immensely.
Darvin Adams emerged as Willy's top target, registering 105 yards receiving and a score, while Andrew Harris was a solid performer in his first game with the Bombers, rushing for 80 yards on just 13 carries. Expect the former BC Lions standout to receive an increased workload against a stout Calgary defence.
The Stampeders looked solid through three quarters against the Lions last week, but a Chris Rainey 73-yard punt return touchdown in the fourth was the difference in a 20-18 road loss.
Bo Levi Mitchell was solid but certainly not his usual spectacular self, throwing for 233 yards and a touchdown. The offence struggled to sustain drives all game, registering just a paltry 258 total yards. If the Stampeders hope to notch their first win of the young campaign, Jerome Messam and Tory Harrison will have to break out.
The pair of running backs could only register 35 yards on the ground, freeing up the Lions pass rush to tee off on Mitchell.
Week one performances show that this could be a low-scoring affair, with the Bombers trying to exact some revenge for the Stampeders winning all three meetings between the two last season.
