The Edmonton Eskimos are taking care of their franchise quarterback, as they announced a contract extension for Mike Reilly through the 2018 season.

"I couldn't be more excited to continue my career in Edmonton with the Eskimos," Reilly said. "I have always had the utmost confidence in (general manager) Ed Hervey’s vision for this team and that has been strengthened by the addition of (head coach) Jason Maas and his coaching staff.

"I take great pride in being a part of the Edmonton community and this great organization, and I can’t wait to get back to work with my teammates and try to win another Grey Cup."

The reigning Grey Cup MVP has been with the Eskimos since being traded by the BC Lions in January 2013, and emerged as the team's starting pivot that year.

Reilly threw for 2,449 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2015, a season that was shortened by injury but culminated in a Grey Cup title. The 31-year-old Central Washington product also captured CFL Player of the Week honours three times, and was a nominee for the league's Most Outstanding Player award.

“Mike is a true professional and exceptional player. He works hard and is a fierce competitor and leader, on and off the field," said Hervey. "He has become a franchise player and continues to push himself and his teammates to be the very best."

The Eskimos will open their 2016 campaign at home versus the Ottawa RedBlacks in what will be a rematch of the Grey Cup.
