After years on NFL practice rosters, Mace signs with the Stamps

CALGARY - More than one CFL general manager will soon learn whether they were right to trade the rights to Corey Mace, a non-import defensive lineman who has spent the last three years trying to crack an NFL roster.

The 24-year-old's rights were shipped from Winnipeg to Hamilton, and then onto Toronto and Calgary as teams waited for him to move north. Mace was officially signed by the Stampeders on Sunday.

"I'm excited about Corey being here and to get him out on the football field," Calgary head coach and general manager John Hufnagel said in a release. "I believe he'll be able to come in and compete at a high level during practice and I look forward to seeing what he can bring to the table."

Mace, from Port Moody, B.C., is a 287-pound defensive lineman who spent three years with the Buffalo Bills, almost entirely as a member of the practice roster. The Blue Bombers selected him in the second round of the 2007 CFL draft.

The Argos acquired him last year in the well-documented trade that sent star slotback Arland Bruce III to the rival Ticats. Mace signed a one-year deal with the Bills days later, and never reported to Toronto.
