Suspension of Lions DT Mitchell upheld
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Canadian Football League announced Wednesday that an independent arbitrator has upheld the two-game suspension of BC Lions defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell.
The penalty, administered by commissioner Mark Cohon last month, was for Mitchell's unnecessary reckless act against Edmonton Eskimos offensive lineman Simeon Rottier. It was during a July 20th game when Mitchell hyperextended the arm of Rottier.
Mitchell appealed the suspension a few days later.
"I accept the decision of the arbitrator and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to go through the process of an appeal," Mitchell said in a prepared statement.
The decision means Mitchell will be eligible to return for the Aug. 31 game at Montreal.
"We welcome this decision and will continue to work with our players and their association to safeguard player health and safety," Cohon said.
