Kyle Walters steps down as the Guelph Gryphons head football coach

GUELPH, Ont. - Kyle Walters resigned Friday as the head football coach at the University of Guelph.

Walters, a native of St. Thomas, Ont., will pursue coaching ventures at the professional level, the school said in a statement.

Walters spent four seasons as Guelph's head coach, amassing a 13-18-1 record. But he led the Gryphons to three straight playoff appearances (2007-2009).

He enjoyed his most successful season in 2007 when Guelph reached the OUA final.

Walters played his college football at Guelph and joined the staff as an assistant coach (2004-2005) before being named head coach in February 2006.

"I want to thank all the players from over the years as well as the entire coaching and support staff that have helped make this one of the best jobs I've ever had," said Walters. "I can't say enough about these players and the coaching staff.

"While it's time for me to move in a new direction in my coaching journey, I know that the Guelph Gryphons program will continue to grow and I wish them all the best."

After completing his college career, Walters went on to play defensive back in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, appearing in consecutive Grey Cup games in 1998 and 1999, winning the latter.
