Eskimos ink DE Ellis through 2012

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - The Edmonton Eskimos signed defensive end Kai Ellis to a contract through the 2012 season on Monday.

Ellis tied for the team lead with 62 tackles and six sacks while registering a team-high five tackles for a loss in 18 regular-season games.

The 29-year-old also posted 11 special teams tackles, forced one fumble and had a fumble recovery for a TD in his first season with the Eskimos after being acquired on February 16 from Winnipeg in exchange for Siddeeq Shabazz.

"Kai showed this season that he has all the tools to be one of the CFL's best D-linemen game in and game out," said Edmonton general manager Danny Maciocia. "He plays with a rare combination of tremendous strength, athleticism and nastiness that makes Kai very difficult to defend against."

In seven seasons, the University of Washington product has accumulated 19 sacks and 281 tackles for Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg and Edmonton.
