BC holds on to hand Montreal second loss
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jarious Jackson found Emmanuel Arceneaux in the end zone for the go-ahead score and British Columbia's defense made a key stop late in regulation, as the Lions held on to stun Montreal, 19-12.
Jackson completed 17-of-30 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (4-5), who have won three of their last four games. Martell Mallett set a BC single-game rushing record with 213 yards and also caught a TD pass, while Paris Jackson amassed 86 yards on six receptions.
It was an historic victory for BC's Wally Buono, who tied Don Matthews as the all-time leader in CFL coaching wins at 231.
Anthony Calvillo threw for 294 yards on 18-of-29 attempts for the Alouettes (7-2), who had won three straight. Jamel Richardson led all receivers with 146 yards on five grabs. Avon Cobourne rushed for 93 yards on 13 carries, but came up one yard short on Montreal's potential game-tying drive.
The Alouettes, who have not won in BC Place since 2000, opened the scoring in the second quarter when a botched snap on a punt was scooped up by Eric Deslauriers and returned 34 yards for a TD.
Jarious Jackson and Mallett connected for a five-yard score, and Sean Whyte kicked a 27-yard field goal to give the Lions a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Consecutive singles and a 36-yard Damon Duval field goal put Montreal on top, 12-10, with about eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
Pinned deep in their own zone, Duval conceded a safety, tying the game with five minutes to play.
On the ensuing series, Mallett rumbled 54 yards to set up Jackson's five-yard strike to Arceneaux with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining.
Calvillo promptly guided Montreal to the BC eight-yard line, where on third- and-one, Cobourne was bottled up.
