WTF: Daniel Gibson Raps
It's almost never a good idea for athletes to try and break into the music industry.
Whether it's Cowboys linemen playing in a metal band, a Bengals tight end crooning for Christ or Oscar de la Hoya making sappy Spanish love songs, every time an athlete sings, they prove that it wasn't just peer pressure that kept the guys on your high school football team from also being in the choir.
However, none of these guys are as universally misguided as the legions of aspiring rappers that dwell in NBA locker rooms. Most of them are horrible, and even when the rhymes aren't bad, the lyrics usually cause David Stern to have a minor cardiac.
Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson has managed to take jock-rap to a frightening new place, though. He drops a guest verse on "She Can Get It," the debut single by Houston R and B duo The VX. First of all, to say the video for "She Can Get It" is low budget may be the greatest understatement of all time. The video shows The VX and Gibson as sock puppets, with stolen still images occasionally stuck over top. It features such lyrical gems as "She wore them itsy-bitsy, teeny-weenie, Gucci-Louis-Mussolini jeans..." and "Baby, you're the shit, and no Febreeze for the aroma." Most disturbingly, The VX seem to have an odd fixation on sexy female puppets.
I have to assume that Gibson was absolutely blackout drunk when he agreed to be a part of this. If he wasn't, then it can only mean that he's secretly Delonte West crazy, and has been able to conceal it until now.
That said, I kind of like the song in spite of myself. I watched the video way, way more times than I needed to to write this post, and keep repeating Gibson's line about wanting to "Beat it up 'til it need stitches" under my breath.
