New Record For Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

Garrett McNamara of Hawaii is the new Guinness World Record holder for the biggest wave ever surfed, after surfing a 78-foot wave (!) on November 1, 2011 at Nazare, Portugal's Praia do Norte beach. 

Yes, that happened over six months ago, but the news that McNamara is the new record holder was not announced until Friday at the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards. The previous record was a 77-foot wave, surfed by Mike Parson off the Southern California coast in 2008.
