The Greatest Sports Games Ever

It's almost that special time on the sports fan's calendar when 64 combatants enter one tournament with hopes of earning the elusive championship. No, we're not talking about a bunch of college kids marching to New Orleans; we're talking about #GreatestSportsGameEver.

theScore.com has assembled a field of 64 classic and modern sports games and seeded them 1-thru-8 across eight divisions: Hockey, Basketball, Combat, Racing, Football, Soccer, Baseball and Miscellaneous. Our crack team of nerds have been mashing buttons for several weeks in an effort to present #GreatestSportsGameEver final bracket.

The results of the first two rounds will be posted on theScore Buzz Wednesday, February 29.

Check out some theScore.com bloggers and personalities hyping their favourite games:

@scottcarefoot: NBA Jam is a very fun game, but the "My Player" mode in NBA 2K12 can take over your life. Also, the realism in 2K12 is unparalleled. 2K12 FTW.

@RWhittall: NHL ’94. Because I spent several hours playing full seven game playoffs with a friend of mine, got drunk and won the LA Kings (with Kelley Hrudey in net, by the way) a Stanley Cup. Also, Sega version featured in Swingers with the Gretzky head bleed.

@TheScottLewis: MVP Baseball 2005 is the best baseball game ever made.

@Score_Tomlinson: Mario Kart is still one of the best party games, especially the most recent WII version with the steering wheel.

@SeanKeay: “Virtual Boy Division owns - Whoever wins between Mario Kart & Tyson’s Punch Out has this tournament in the bag. #GreatestSportsGameEver”

@arda_ocal: It’s a shame Mike Tyson’s Punch Out and Mario Kart are on the same side of the bracket because that’s the dream finals matchup.

@JUyeyama: NHL 94 - If you’ve played it, there is no explanation necessary. If you haven’t played it, then no explanation would suffice. Best. Game. EVER.

@AndrewStoeten: Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl is as dominant a video game character as has ever been devised by science. Think about it.

@KennyNorton: Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Insanely hard game that makes you realize how much better you were at video games when you were a kid.

@arda_ocal: Honorary mention to Blades of Steel though, the mini game at the end of the second period is better than most games in this bracket!

@DrewGROF: MVP 2005. The perfect balance of immersive and entertaining. Gouge your fans when the Yankees come to town and shed tears when you trade Jimmy Gobble.
