Gary Pettis Holds Gary Pettis' Card

Every Wednesday we'll be highlighting some of the ugliest, funniest, and error-ridden sports cards of both past and present. Today we have a second laugh at former Major Leaguer Gary Pettis.

We've highlighted the hijinx of one Gary Pettis in the past when we showcased his brother sitting in for him on a Topps photo shoot. Well, today we have a look at another instance of Gary Pettis having some fun with yet another card company. Pettis' 1989 Upper Deck card features a photo of him holding his own card from the set.

Baseball card blog Baseball Cards Come To Life points out a couple of discrepancies between the card Pettis is pictured holding and the actual card from the '89 Upper Deck set:

The top left with his name and vital information is not there, and there is no background behind the stats. Also, the picture cuts off at a different place on the left side. Not all of his leg is visible on the prototype card, but the whole leg is visible on the actual card.

Still, it's a pretty clever bit of trickery on the part of Gary Pettis, even with the continuity issues.
