Jock Music: Murray State

Jock Music looks at the places where music and sports overlap.

Generally, Jock Music reviews the musical efforts of various professional athletes. Occasionally, we'll do something else, like look at Waka Flocka Flame's slightly-nonsensical series of basketball-themed mixtapes. We never really do fan videos.

This week, we're going to change that.

Murray State are probably the story of the NCAA basketball season. The Racers are currently 21-0, the only undefeated team in the country, the runaway leaders of the Ohio Valley Conference, and No. 10 in the AP Poll. That deserves a song. Two Murray State students, Trubz 'n' Matlock — I'm assuming those aren't their real names — composed a rap anthem for the racers. It's not bad.

Don't get me wrong, it's not good, either. There are a couple lines in here that are just bricks — the line about Popeye is pretty terrible — but thankfully, this sort of bombastic Southern fried rap never asked for great lyricism, just a vaguely ominous-but-still-danceable beat and a shout-along chorus, which "Murray State Anthem" delivers in spades. This isn't the sort of thing that's going to turn the music industry on its head, but if you're a fan of overachieving Mid-Major schools, or Crime Mob, or both, then you'll probably dig it.
