Klopp has 'nothing to add' on Gotze's Liverpool link

Jurgen Klopp would not be drawn into discussing the potential signing of Bayern Munich star Mario Gotze, but did confess that he's a player of "extraordinary abilities."

The German manager oversaw his compatriot at Borussia Dortmund before his lucrative €37-million transfer to Bavaria in 2013, and has been rumoured to be reuniting with Gotze at Liverpool this summer.

When asked of the speculation, Klopp tried to divert attention onto Joel Matip, the FC Schalke 04 defender who is already confirmed to be moving to Merseyside this summer.

"We can talk about Matip or something else, but not Mario," Klopp told Ruhr Nachrichten, according to ESPN FC, before noting Gotze's goalscoring performance in Germany's comprehensive 4-1 defeat of Italy on Tuesday.

"I am happy that he put in a good performance yesterday. But there is nothing to add from my side," Klopp said. "He's a player with extraordinary abilities and wants to return to full fitness after four months on the sidelines."

Even when fit, Gotze has struggled for minutes at club level under Pep Guardiola this season. Liverpool apparently hopes this will pave his route to Anfield, despite repeated questions over the attacker's work ethic.

"Why can't he produce consistent performances? For me the answer is obvious - he has to train much, much more," former Bayern Munich midfielder and Germany international Mehmet Scholl said before Tuesday's match.

"I remember when he was very young at Dortmund. He was an arrow, he was so fast, he was so athletic. At the moment he is so far removed from that."

Gotze was urged to comment on Scholl's sentiments after his starring role at the Allianz Arena.

"I didn't know that he observes my training, that he is always there. I think that I train enough," the 23-year-old told reporters.

The reports that young attack-minded duo Jerome Sinclair and Jordon Ibe are on their way out of Liverpool, and the constant speculation around the future of Christian Benteke, appear to be leaving a convenient vacancy for Gotze in Klopp's frontline.

Liverpool faces Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday's Premier League fixtures.
