Borussia Dortmund came out victorious in a heated match against rivals FC Schalke 04 to win the 147th edition of the Ruhr derby.

Goals from Shinji Kagawa, Matthias Ginter, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang helped secure a 3-2 win at the Westfalenstadion, as Dortmund extends its unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to five matches.

The victory also maintains the team's position in second place, five points back of Bayern Munich.

Aubameyang continued his blistering scoring run when his tally gave Dortmund a 3-1 lead moments after the break.

The goal, which proved to be the winner, brought the Gabon international level with Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski for the Bundesliga lead with 14 goals.

The result, however, was far from guaranteed late in the fixture, as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's second goal of the game erased Dortmund's two-goal advantage and ignited a period where Dortmund found itself under pressure in its own end.

Schalke came close to finding an equaliser, but Dortmund 'keeper Roman Burki produced a brilliant save to maintain the host's lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Tempers boiled over late in the encounter when Julian Weigl was hacked down by a nasty challenge from late substitute Felix Platte. A small scuffle ensued minutes before the final whistle, which resulted in the Schalke player being issued a yellow card.
