Dortmund hopeful Sahin's season not done

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund is optimistic that midfielder Nuri Sahin will play again this season after picking up an ankle injury Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel's lot all but secured a Champions League berth with a 3-2 victory at Monchengladbach, but it wasn't without a cost, as Sahin was forced off in the 22nd minute after getting on the wrong end of a Tobias Strobl tackle.

It was initially feared that the Turkish international suffered serious damage that would see him ruled out for the remainder of the season. The club assuaged those concerns Monday with a statement on its website, adding that Sahin sustained a partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament.

To be fair, that still sounds quite grievous, with Dortmund's statement admitting, "This diagnosis means there is still hope that the 28-year-old midfield player could still play a role in the final run-in to the season."

Either way, another injury is the last thing treatment-table regular Sahin needs after the 51-time capped international missed stretches of the season with a knee injury, a spine concern, and a bout with the flu. The Dortmund academy product has appeared in just four league matches this campaign after playing in nine fixtures last term, and seven the year prior.

Sitting in third, six points adrift of Bundesliga debutant RB Leipzig, Dortmund has four matches remaining in its domestic campaign and a DFB-Pokal finals date with rival Bayern Munich on April 26 to play for amid an erratic term for Tuchel's budding side.
