Hoffenheim's run as last unbeaten side in Europe's top 5 leagues ends
Unbeaten no more.
Hoffenheim surrendered its first Bundesliga loss of the season Saturday at RB Leipzig, joining the rest of the teams in Europe's top five leagues with at least one defeat to its name.
Julian Nagelsmann's side was the last to hold an undefeated record in domestic play.
Winning seven matches and recording 10 draws, Hoffenheim became just the sixth team in Bundesliga history to reach the midway mark of the campaign without conceding a single contest. Bayern Munich (on three occasions), Hamburg, and Stuttgart all achieved the feat in the past.
Nagelsmann has lifted Hoffenheim from the precipice of the relegation zone last season to fourth place in the space of just eight months.
The Upper Rhine outfit did lose 2-1 in extra time of a DFB Pokal fixture against FC Koln on Oct. 26, but that did not count against its sterling league record at the time.
Sandro Wagner's goals have helped. Fifth among Bundesliga poachers with 10 tallies, the 29-year-old is on his way to establishing a career high.
But it was a red card to Wagner on Saturday that gave Leipzig the opportunity to humble Hoffenheim. With the score tied at one in the 77th minute, Marcel Sabitzer's deflected strike put the home side in the lead for good.
