Dortmund's Burki out 8 weeks with broken hand

Borussia Dortmund will be without first-choice shot-stopper Roman Burki for eight weeks after the 26-year-old broke his hand.

Dortmund confirmed Sunday that the fracture will require surgery.

The Young Boys product is now likely to miss no fewer than six Bundesliga matches and Champions League group stage tilts against Legia Warsaw and Real Madrid, with the German top-flight's winter break over the holidays providing a silver lining for the Swiss international.

Tough break for the player who has started all but one of the club's league fixtures and in each of its four continental matches, though he could do worse than a clean sheet Saturday against rival Bayern Munich as his last action of the calendar year.

As one Roman hits the treatment table, another grabs a pair of dusty gloves. With Burki out, his veteran understudy Roman Weidenfeller will assume the first-choice role, starting with Tuesday's visit from Polish champ Legia.

A loyal servant to the club, Weidenfeller joined Dortmund in 2002 from Kaiserslautern, and has made 340 appearances for the German giant, capturing two Bundesliga titles and a domestic cup during that period.
