Bastian Schweinsteiger's treatment at Manchester United hasn't gone unnoticed in Germany.

German teammate Manuel Neuer has come to the former Bayern Munich captain's defence amid reports Manchester United is exploring ways to sever ties with Schweinsteiger.

"We know how important Bastian is for every team, whether it was Bayern or the (national team)," Neuer told ESPN FC. "For me, he was one of the best midfielders in the world, and still is. So it's sad that the football world can't see that."

On Wednesday, Schweinsteiger released a brief message outlining his situation, saying that he is unwilling to join another European club and is prepared to play if United needs him.

Schweinsteiger, who has yet to feature for United since Jose Mourinho was named manager, will appear in his final match with the German national team in a friendly against Finland next week.
